BOATER SAFETY: FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

All vessels, including personal watercraft, are required to have a Type B fire extinguisher on bard if one or more of the following conditions exist:

• Closed compartments under seats where portable fuel may be stored.
• Closed storage in which flammable or combustible  materials may be stored.
• Double-bottoms not sealed to the hull or that are not completely filled with flotation material.
• Closed living spaces.
• Permanently installed fuel tanks.

Approved types of fire extinguishers are identified by the "Marine Type USCG Approved" label followed by the type and size symbols and the approval number.

Extinguishers should be placed in an accessible area where they can be reached immediately and not near the engine or in a compartment. Be sure you know how to operate the extinguisher and inspect extinguishers regularly to ensure they are in working condition and that they are fully charged and ready for use.
